Opening Keynote: Creating Caring Campuses: It's easier than you
Thursday February 13, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am PST
Students come where they are welcome and stay where they feel cared about. If students don’t feel connected to the college they attend, they are far less likely to persist and succeed, regardless of the academic interventions and support services the college has provided. As the Aspen Institute notes, “A culture of caring has become a hallmark of excellent community colleges.”
The Institute for Evidence-Based Change (IEBC) has created Caring Campus based on research that shows students who feel more connected to their college are more likely to be retained, persist from semester to semester, and complete their academic goals. Increasing connectedness, therefore, can go a long way toward increasing the likelihood of maintaining enrollment.

AI in the Workforce: Insights from Industry Advisors to Shape Higher Education
Thursday February 13, 2025 1:55pm - 2:55pm PST
Artificial Intelligence is reshaping industries at breakneck speed, but are our educational institutions keeping pace? This session unveils the eye-opening results of Rogue Community College's survey on AI adoption among its Career and Technical Education (CTE) program advisory committee members, offering a unique glimpse into the evolving landscape of AI in our regional workforce. We'll present key findings on current AI usage, application areas, perceived benefits, and challenges faced by organizations across various sectors. The survey provides valuable insights into how different industries in the Rogue Valley are leveraging AI, from customer service and data analysis to process automation and cybersecurity. We'll explore the implications of these findings for curriculum development, ethical considerations, and the future of higher education. Participants will gain a nuanced understanding of the skills gap between current educational offerings and industry needs. We'll discuss potential strategies for integrating AI-related competencies into existing programs and developing new courses that align with emerging trends. The session will also address the ethical implications of AI in education, including concerns about academic integrity and responsible AI use by students. By sharing our survey results and fostering discussion, we aim to catalyze important conversations about AI's role in higher education. Attendees will leave with valuable insights to inform their own institutional approaches to AI integration, whether in curriculum development, instructional design, or ethical policy-making.

Thursday February 13, 2025 1:55pm - 2:55pm PST
Although you may think of Restorative Justice as being primarily about repairing harm or as a tool to replace punitive forms of discipline, restorative justice principles can also be used to proactively build the relationships and skills we need to support one another, to put voice to our concerns, and to navigate challenging situations. This session will explore one of the central tools of restorative justice practice, the Circle. Circles can be used in classrooms and with colleagues to build community and to repair harm. We will take time to provide some context and history of Circles as well as to demonstrate some Circle elements. We will also offer space to collectively consider ways we might be able to integrate Circles into our own higher education settings.
